LUXE PACK and MakeUp in LosAngeles closed on a high note last week after the two-day event at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Visitor numbers reached 5,351, an increase of 28% on last year.
The hotly anticipated LUXE PACK Exploratorium did not disappoint this year, highlighting some of the latest luxury packaging developments from show exhibitors. From new stock products to recent launches with brands, we take a closer look at some of the innovations on display.
SR Packaging’s Airless Shuttles are designed for personalized beauty products. They hold between two to four different formulas in PCR airless cartridges in a reusable case. The newest version is the duo format, which combines a PET case, and overcap with an ABS collar. The packs housing three or four products, meanwhile, have a PETG overcap, PP collar and PMMA case. The airless cartridges feature an rHDPE exterior wall and EVOH-PP inner pouch.
Balance Inc’s Origami Collection consists of FSC-certified paper constructions designed to bring a tactile and eye-catching effect to secondary packaging. They can be used as a sleeve, bellyband or knockdown.
Colorworld’s cornstarch tray that dissolves in water and its molded paper pulp that can be used to make inserts or boxes were on display.
Epopack’s PET dropper is comprised of a tube and collar in 100% PET (PCR is an option), while the bulb can be in silicone or NBR. The tube comes in three lengths: 53mm, 63mm and 73mm. The supplier’s MJA 100% PET jars (also available with PCR) come in 10ml, 15ml, 30ml and 50ml options. The range will be extended to include a 100ml format by mid-2023. In terms of decoration, color injection or a frosted finish are possible.
Paper Tube Co’s EcoVault is patented, child-resistant packaging that combines a 100% paper tube with an ABS cap. It can be used for an array of products, from cannabis to supplements.
Apollo+Beauty’s Double-R Dispenser facilitates separation of the metal pump spring from the plastic cylinder for recycling. Consumers simply unscrew the dip tube from the actuator to dissemble the components.
APC Packaging’s JPG jar combines a double-walled glass jar with a PP inner jar and cap. Its monomaterial system dropper and bottle, meanwhile, is a patented design that uses PP enhanced with NX UltraClear for material clarity similar to that of glass.
Quadpack’s Woodacity range was on show at the Exploratorium. It includes a wooden jar, compact, and the Iconic lipstick developed with Aptar Beauty.
Knoll Printing & Packaging’s patent-pending 100% Ecoform pulp compacts are designed to replace plastic make-up compacts. Versions that are magnet-free and with a removable mirror are possible. The compacts can be color-matched and embellished with embossing, stamping or by adding an FSC paper mask.
French glassmaker Verescence showed its fragrance bottles for Juicy Couture. The lacquered flacons have a deep push-up enabling them to be stacked: ensuring a perfect fit with the top and bottom plates was a challenge, notes the glassmaker. Also on show was Guerlain’s Double R Renew & Repair Serum that uses Verescence’s Verre Infini 20 grade composed of 20% PCR glass.
Swedish papermaker Billerud showcased its redesigned secondary packaging for Scandinavian fragrance house Andrea Maack. The new fragrance box uses less material than its predecessor and is cellophane-free. Echoing the shape of the bottle, the pack is made using Billerud’s 14. Pt Crownboard Prestige. It is embellished with offset printing, embossing and glossy spot varnish, finished with a water-based protective lacquer.
SMCG’s-30ml refillable jar for Lancôme’s Absolue Sublime Essence-in-Cream Foundation uses a patented mold to create a cut-glass effect, even on the parting line. The high-clarity (over 95% transparency) jar contains 60% PCR content and combines with a PP inner and metallized PP lid.
Dapy’s 2023 Chinese New Year holiday box for luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet is made of FSC carton with a soft-touch laminate. Embellished with four-color printing, embossing and hot-stamping, it features grosgrain ribbons to hold the pack open at a 90-degree angle.
LUXE PACK and MakeUp in LosAngeles have announced 2024 dates: the sister shows will be taking place on February 14- 15 next year.
