Nomacorc Ocean is made primarily from ocean bound plastic. Wineries in Italy and France have already adopted the closure for their product packaging.
Wine closures specialist Vinventions has launched what it claims is “the first closure worldwide made using Ocean Bound Plastic”.
The company tells Formes de Luxe that the closure is composed of 70% ocean bound plastic and 30% virgin plastic. The ocean bound plastic is sourced from coastlines in South East Asia.
“Based on scientific studies, ocean bound plastic is estimated to generate 80% of plastic marine litter. By recycling this plastic and using it in a new product, the aim is being part of the value chain, at our scale, to increase the demand for harvesting waste and thus reduce its volume and the risk it presents for nature. To be effective against this pollution, the areas for collection matters. The recycled raw material used for Nomacorc Ocean comes from coastal areas located in Asia, where marine pollution is considered the highest,” Romain Thomas, Nomacorc Product Manager at Vinventions, said in a statement.

Vinventions declined to comment on the cost premium of the closure compared to a standard model.
In Sicily, Donnafugata estate adopted Nomacorc Ocean for its Damarino cuvée. France’s Maison Bouey selected the closure for its Oh La Vache! wine.
