Tales of The Macallan Volume I is the first installment in a new series from Scotch whisky maker The Macallan. For the packaging of this 71-year-old single malt, the brand teamed up with French crystal specialist Lalique and London-based bookbinders Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf.
Scotland’s The Macallan has launched Tales of The Macallan Volume I, the first limited-edition, single malt in a new line that pays tributes to those that shaped The Macallan’s history.
The 1950 single malt is housed in a bespoke, handcrafted crystal decanter (Lalique) etched with an illustration from Andrew Davidson, a British artist and illustrator known for his wood engravings. For the decanter, the soufflé fixe (fixed while blown) technique is used. “The technical challenge with "hot glass" lies in the printing of Davidson’s captivating and detailed illustrations, in order to have a sharp impression on a small surface,” Lalique explains. The decanter comes with a bespoke transit stopper (J.C Ribeiro).
In guise of secondary packaging, an 800-page almanac conceals the decanter within its pages thanks to cut outs shaped to the bottle and stopper. The leather and 24-carat gold leaf book, illustrated by Andrew Davidson is produced by London-based bookbinders Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf and printed by Paris’ Imprimerie du Marais.
Launched in August, just 350 decanters of Tales of The Macallan Volume 1 The Laird of Easter Elchies (1659 - 1715) are available. Each retails at €65,000.
