The Liquors by Kilian: fragrance or spirits?

Blurring the lines between scent and spirits, luxury fragrance brand Kilian’s (The Estée Lauder Companies) art deco-inspired The Liquors collection pays tribute to founder Kilian Hennessy’s cognac heritage.

For this major launch, the heir to the renowned French cognac family created two unisex scents, Angels’ Share and Roses on Ice. The fragrances come in either a refillable fragrance flacon designed to resemble Art Deco bar ware, or in a carafe format inspired by cognac tasting rituals.

Described as “trompe l’oeil objects”, the bottles (Stoelzle Masnières Parfumerie) in thick walled glass are engraved with the emblematic 'K' motif to refract the light.

In what is the glassmaker's first collaboration with Kilian, Stoelzle met with a number of technical challenges due to the complex design. The heavy, facetted bottle, with a particularly small screw ring, required a specific mold that called for unmolding in several steps. Achieving an even distribution of glass on the shoulders and base despite the pronounced intaglio engraving was also a feat, says the supplier. A golden, diamond-shaped plaque (Mill) silkscreened white adorns the bottle’s facing.

The carafe format (Heinz Glas) features the same facetted design—the pattern-chiseled angles representing the letter ‘K’—and diamond-shaped plaque. The 250ml fire-polished flacon is heavy, weighing in at 480g; the rounded glass stopper alone, metallized in gunmetal gray and gold, weighs 135g.

To apply the fragrance from the carafe, consumers can purchase a bulb spray (René Karla) separately. The carafe is also sold with a small funnel, which can be used to refill the travel spray or the fragrance bottles. The 50ml formats of the bottle are refillable in-store or via a refill bottle using French supplier Techniplast's RT-Twist solution. The carafes can be refilled in-store or by purchasing five 50ml refills.

Angels’ Share, so named in reference to the evaporation of liquors in oak barrels during the cognac aging process, was created by French perfumer Benoist Lapouza (Drom Fragrances) and contains notes of cognac, oak absolute and praline. The scent's caramel color is said to be obtained by extracting cognac essence.

Created by perfumer Frank Voelkl (Firmenich), Roses on Ice was designed to “recreate the taste of ‘gin on the rocks’ with a splash of lime.” The scent features notes of cucumber, juniper berry and Rose Centifolia.

The fragrances launched in October 2020 and retail at €180 for the 50ml and €650 for the 250ml carafe.
