Tanaka 1789 x Chartier: a sommelier shakes up Sake

The Tanaka 1789 x Chartier project is the fruit of a collaboration between a Japanese Sake brewery steeped in tradition and Francois Chartier, a master sommelier known for his unique take on innovation.

Francois Chartier worked with Tanaka’s toji (Japanese for master brewer) Morikawa to alter the sake-making process at Tanaka 1789, giving rise to creations inspired by "aromatic science" and the freshness and acidity of white wines.

The first sake to launch in a series is the Tanaka 1789 X Chartier Sake Blend 001, 2018 Vintage. It is housed in a sleek matte black bottle (Estal’s standard Breganze model), conceived by design agency ForceMAJEURE to celebrate what it calls “unexpected associations”.

Coated with a satin black lacquer and featuring minimalist white graphics, the bottle is inspired by the architecture of the Tanaka Brewery. The label is printed in Japan on satin black paper, with raised gloss varnish. The black-on-black grid pattern on the label’s background is a nod to the brewery walls, which were built in the style of the Edo period's Kura architecture. Varnish-printed around the bottle, the grid pattern creates a series of hexagons, meant to symbolize Chartier’s "aromatic science". Embracing the tradition of the Sake world, the black glass stopper (VinoSeal) is sealed with a label.
