Paperboard supplier Stora Enso is responding to chocolate and confectionary brands’ call for lightweight and plastic-free packaging with Performa Light, its new premium folding cartons.
The folding boxboard is suitable for direct food contact and is taste and odor neutral, making it particularly adapted to fine foods.
The coated board features a three-layer fiber construction with a middle layers of CTMP (chemi-thermomechanical pulp) and is said to offer high whiteness and brightness. It is triple-pigment-coated on the top with a white uncoated side on the reverse, which the supplier claims offers superior print results using offset, flexo, rotogravure and digital printing. Embossing and hot stamping are also said to work particularly well.
Stora Enso claims that Performa Light’s CO2 emissions in the production phase are more than 70% lower than competing products (based on paper profiles); it is produced at a carbon neutral mill using Stora Enso’s patented fiber treatment technology, FiberLight Tec. In addition, the microfibrillated cellulose in the structure gives the board added strength, making for safe and lighter-weight packaging.
Beyond chocolate and confectionery, Performa Light is also suited to package beauty and personal-care products.
