With Spoturno 1921, Véronique Coty is reviving - and renaming - an iconic century-old women’s fragrance created by her great grandfather, François Coty.
Spoturno 1921 from Véronique Coty’s company La Cité des Parfums is a revisited version of a scent composed 100 years ago by her great grandfather, François Coty. Interior architect Tristan Auer is behind the design of the extrait de parfum’s packaging, which highlights French craftsmanship.
“Spoturno 1921 is the pinnacle of the rebirth of iconic fragrances from the father of modern perfumery,” Véronique Coty tells Luxe Packaging Insight. The bespoke, crystal flacon (Waltersperger) with its square, tall silhouette is made using semi-automatic production. For the glassmaker, the challenge lay in achieving a light, elegant bottle in an echo of those of yesteryear using a process more adapted to thick-walled flacons.

The stopper, with its inlaid blooming lily, was torch-blown by glass artisan Adrian Colin. Grinding and polishing of the bottle and cap was done by Waltersperger; the glassmaker worked to achieve a perfect fit between the glass stopper – devoid of a plastic piece – and the bottle. The flacon is sealed with a gold thread using the baudruchage technique. A gold, aluminum label (DB Groupe) embossed with the Spoturno family crest adorns the facing. “We had originally opted for a paper label, but as discoloration can occur if it comes in contact with the fragrance, we chose an aluminum alternative,” says Véronique Coty.

The metal structure of the “altar box” – a curved coffret with double doors - was created by Emporte-pièces des Mauges (EPM). The exterior sports an emerald crackle effect with white gold kintsugi detailing (Atelier l'Etoile) and gold leaf on the base and doors (Ateliers Gohard). Bespoke mirrors on the interior of the doors were made by Benoît Bertron, a glass artisan at Kopper Glass.
The wooden, rectangular travel boxes (Dardel) are satin-lined, sheathed with paper from Winter and hot-stamped in gold with the Spoturno crest. Dardel also created the wooden presentation boxes, which are lined in goatskin and covered in paper (Winter).

Grasse-based Parfum Cosmetic World France reworked the original fragrance to comply with current regulations. Spoturno 1921 has top notes of bergamot, lemon and lavender; a floral heart of jasmine, ylang ylang, rose and orange blossom; and a woody base of sandalwood, vetiver and patchouli.
The fragrance comes in two, limited and numbered editions: Edition I, a 100ml extrait de parfum with its “altar box”, of which just 20 are available, priced at €5,000 each; and Edition II, the same, 100ml extrait de parfum, this time in a wooden box, priced at €1,400. Some 200 were created.
