Sustainable packaging is a priority for Ruinart (LVMH), judging from Seconde Peau, the champagne house’s breakthrough secondary packaging solution dedicated to its R, R Millésime, Rosé and Blanc de Blancs cuvees.
“This new packaging is destined to revolutionize the coffret market as it is eco-designed, plastic free and entirely recyclable,” explains the brand. Developed in partnership with Pusterla using paper from James Cropper, the lightweight shell-like case—it is nine times lighter than Ruinart’s previous coffrets—is molded to hug the contours of the bottle. Seconde Peau is said to reduce the pack’s carbon footprint by 60% compared to the previous generation.
The shell is also free of edges due to a pressurized water jet cutting process of its contours, a technique developed specifically for Ruinart. The coffret closes thanks to a snap fastener molded directly onto the case.
The uncoated paper has a rough feel that was conceived to evoke the Crayères, Runiart’s historic cellars. “Developing this chalk-like texture was a technological feat made possible by playing on the finesse and depth of the embossed detailing,” explains the brand.
Seconde Peau will be unveiled at trade show VivaTech in Paris in June and will roll out to markets in Western Europe in the last quarter of 2020. In time, it will replace the brand’s existing coffrets.
