Piper-Heidsieck's wooden Champagne coffret doubles as music speaker

Champagne brand Piper-Heidsieck has introduced a coffret that can be used as a smartphone holder and a “sound amplifier”. Made of oak, the secondary pack is produced by a French family-owned company.

As summer approaches, bringing with it warmer weather, Champagne house Piper-Heidsieck is out to amplify picnic season with its new secondary packaging that doubles as a music speaker. Tapping into the growing consumer trend for a pack that can take on a second life, mainly in light of sustainability concerns, the wooden coffret houses the brand's Essentiel Extra-Brut Champagne.

Piper-Heidsieck affirms that its sound amplifier is part of a natural progression towards increasingly sustainable innovation. “It also illustrates the personality of the maison by offering a universal product that that enhances moments of conviviality around our Essentiel Extra-Brut vintage,” Benoit Collard, Managing Director of Piper-Heidsieck, said in a statement.

Described as a “natural sound amplifier” and requiring neither batteries nor a charger on account of its hollow form and choice of material, the coffret design features a slot to insert a smartphone.

Manufactured by Brittany-based, family-owned company La Tournerie du Plat d’Or, the pack is made of oak sourced from French forests. As for the decoration, the coffret is laser-engraved with Piper-Heidsieck’s logo.

Piper-Heidsieck's Essentiel Extra-Brut retails at €49.99.

As luxury wine and spirits brands increasingly refrain from single-use gift boxes, the market is seeing a flurry of secondary packs designed with their afterlife in mind. Irish whisky brand Redbreast’s copper anodized aluminum pack designed by Nude Brand Creation and produced by packaging supplier GPA Luxury doubles as a hanging bird feeder, while Ruinart's wooden coffret made by Marotte, winner of a Formes de Luxe Award in 2021, is designed to be used as an urban wine cellar to store bottles at home. Veuve Clicquot partnered with Van Genechten for its Veuve Clicquot Ice Box, where the monomaterial secondary pack transforms into an ice bucket. Stay tuned as similar initiatives hit the market.
