Rosé de Saignée from Champagne Pierre Trichet is out to reinvent traditional Champagne packaging with its contemporary design that puts sustainability front and center. The brand opted for a 100% paper overcap, an ink-free label and secondary packaging made of compressed vine stock and flax shives.
For the packaging of Rosé de Saignée, France’s Champagne Pierre Trichet chose to focus on sustainability, seeking out novel materials and processes, with an emphasis on working with local suppliers. The packaging was designed in-house by Emeline Cordy.
“There are two major innovations with this cuvee: the 100% paper overcap that is a world-first, and the coffret, made of a brand new material – Ceplin – which is partly composed of Champagne vine stock,” CEO Pierre Trichet tells Luxe Packaging Inisght.
The embossed paper overcap (Vipalux) is made of Billerudkorsnäs' FibreForm grade (100% virgin fibers). “Due to its thickness, the paper keeps its shape during the folding process,” says Trichet, who highlights that the overcap is free from glue and plastic and therefore 100% recyclable.
“Consumer perceptions around how Champagne bottles are dressed need to change, with less of a focus on perfection,” he muses. “Today, this 'perfection' comes from the malleability of plastic. While our capsule's paper pleats may not be aesthetically perfect like those of aluminum composites, it’s a responsible and eco-friendly option.”
The galvanized metal wirehood (Géraudel/Sàbat) is cut out on the top in the form of the brand logo. “The wirehood is exclusive to us, and represents the first time the muselet producer made one with a punch tool,” says Trichet. Compared to the brand’s previous muselets, the use of ink has been reduced by 99%.
For the facing label (LATA), Champagne Pierre Trichet opted for an ink-free, embossed design whose color and texture is reminiscent of chalk. The form of the logo is pre-cut, with the label applied to the bottle by hand.
The laser-engraved box (Full Pack) is made of Ceplin, a new material created by a French start-up that combines 30% compressed Champagne vine stock and 70% flax shives.
Rosé de Saignée is a 2018 vintage made with 70% Pinot Meunier & 30% Pinot Noir, both Premier Cru. Just 1,573 bottles are available, priced at €110.
