Penhaligon’s forgotten formulas set the stage for new fragrance collection

Potions & Remedies is British perfume brand Penhaligon’s (Puig) latest fragrance collection. Drawing on the brand’s forgotten formulas, the five EdPs come in apothecary-style bottles adorned with vintage-like labels.

Inspired by the brand’s founder William Penhaligon’s interest in harnessing the power of plants, the eponymous brand's new fragrance range paints a picture of days long gone, when potions held magical properties.

Evoking vintage apothecary bottles, the refillable, cylindrical flacon (Bormioli Luigi) has a recessed area on the facing for the label, as well as a vertical groove between the label and the neck fitted with a ribbon. The offset-printed and embossed polyester ribbon (Anaik) is threaded under the paper label. Supplier ICA supplied the label and assembled the ribbon. The bespoke flacon contains a portion of recycled glass.

Both the neck and bottle labels (Eurostampa) are printed on uncoated FSC paper, and hot stamped with vintage-style typography. The neck label is glued end-to-end using an automatic process. Both labels are designed to withstand the bottle being refilled five times.

The flacons are topped with zamak caps (Meiyume) adorned with colored PCTA glued onto the shell: each ribbon is color matched to the cap. A laser-engraved logo features on the cap.

In terms of secondary packaging, the fragrances come in hot-stamped and embossed boxes (Etna-Pack), made with offset-printed old mill premium white 350gsm stock from Fedrigoni. A polystyrene stamp evoking a wax seal (Signet) decorates the box facing.

Penhaligon's taps into the power of ingredients

With Potions and Remedies, Penhaligon’s came up with a story of "forgotten formulas, recipes and prescriptions". The collection includes five scents: Liquid Love with notes of ginger and rose described as a "distillation that set hearts fluttering"; Balm of Calm meant to "soothe the soul" with top notes of lavender and sandalwood; Eau the Audacity, said to be "good for boosting confidence", thanks to incense and vanilla notes; A Kiss of Bliss or "bottled luck"” with musk and lucky clover; and Vra Vra Vroom which urges the user to "spritz your way to success" with notes of osmanthus and magnolia.
