New chocolate brand Cartografie banks on terroir and sustainable luxury

From the desert valleys of Piura, northern Peru to the Virunga National Park in Eastern Congo, luxury chocolate company Cartografie, with terroir at its heart, aims to “map exquisite chocolate stories”. Studio Minerva is behind the brand creation and packaging design.

UK-based luxury chocolate company Cartografie, co-founded by Studio Minerva Founder and Executive Creative Director Daniela Nunzi-Mihranian in 2020, has adopted a sustainable and ethical approach that encompasses both products and packaging. To create its handcrafted chocolates – housed in glue-free origami-style packs – the brand sources direct from farmers and works with suppliers Original Beans, Amedei and Islands.

The boxes are printed and assembled in London, also home to Cartografie’s chocolate studio. The brand worked with London-based printer FE Burman on the packs, which are made using Colorplan, Wild (GF Smith) and Keaykolour (Arjowiggins) papers that are FSC-certified and World Land Trust carbon balanced.

The packaging’s color palette is inspired by natural, earth tones designed to evoke “the origins of the cocoa” and create a contrast with a glossy world map printed on the lid of the boxes. The boxes are decorated sparingly with gold foil, used to mark the 20 degrees on either side of the Equator, where the beans ripen. The packs are digitally printed with minimal quantities of ink; for the bespoke logotype, a classic serif was transformed to create merging letters and flowing lines intended to bring to mind the movement of melting chocolate.

The no-glue, origami-style boxes are delivered flat and assembled by hand with inserts that can be used across various box sizes.
