A challenge both in its conception and execution, Maison Mumm’s Cordon Rouge Stellar Champagne was developed for drinking... in space. Sheathed in an aeronautical-grade aluminum shell, the wine is set for lift off as soon as 2023.
Initiated in 2017, the Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar project unites design, space exploration and Champagne, with the goal of creating the first bottle of Champagne to be consumed in outer space.
The packaging had to respect a complex set of constraints before the launch. The first of these was the container itself. AOC regulations stipulate that Champagne wines must be stored and transported in a glass vessel, and be topped with the traditional "mushroom"-shaped cork. But in space, and therefore in the absence of gravity, gaseous liquids behave differently, having an impact on pressure inside the bottle, which calls for tailored materials and closure specificiations.
In terms of materials, Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar comes in a custom-made 37.5cl glass bottle (Glass Model) contained inside a 70cl outer shell (AMB) made of aeronautical-grade aluminum, which provides double security. The shell features screen-printed text (Palatnik) and minimal engravings (AMB).
Referred to as the “service part”, the bottle’s upper part is topped with a rounded, stainless steel locking mechanism (AMB) that secures the traditional cork stopper (Amorim). The Champagne is retained by the locking device, so the liquid only comes into contact with glass, stainless steel and cork, in keeping with AOC regulations.
The packaging was designed and assembled by designer Octave de Gaulle and his agency SPADE, specialized in the design of objects for space. The project was also supported by CNES and Comat research office.
Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar blends 2016 Pinot Noir and the House’s reserve wines from the past five years. The price is yet to be determined. The bottle is to launch with American company Axiom Space in 2023.
