France-based MPO, a specialist in coffrets and merchandising solutions, has updated its Eco Touch range of coffrets with plastic-free silver film and closures made from ocean waste.
Eco Touch can now make the claim of being a 100% plastic-free packaging, with its components either compostable, recyclable or made from FSC-certified materials.
First off, the range now features plastic-free metallic film. MPO worked with a partner whose technique creates a metallic finish without calling for polyester film at any stage of the production process. “Unlike transfer metallization, this technique does not produce film waste. It allows for the metallization of the cardboard itself, which eliminates the need for plastic that is typically found in the production of transfer metallized products,” MPO sales and development director François Malissin explained to Luxe Packaging Insight. This also means that the coffrets and cases are 100% recyclable, added the supplier.
Another update to the made-in-France range is the handle, which is now crafted in a polyester fiber made from ocean plastic waste. “The fiber can be used in its 100% natural version, but can also be colored using eco-friendly dyes,” notes Malissin.
Another novelty is in the realm of decoration: the paper pulp inserts can now be hot stamped and screen-printed. The boxes themselves come from short circuit recycling, the inserts are made of hot-pressed paper pulp and the coffret and box sheaths are in cardboard made from flax, hemp and sugarcane fiber.
The box windows are in cellulose acetate and the inks and glues used are environmentally friendly. "Eco-design is not about a single, perfect solution, but rather a continuous improvement process," affirms Malissin.
