Mermaid Zest: Isle of Wight's latest limited-edition gin

English distillery Isle of Wight has expanded its spirits portfolio with a limited-edition gin dubbed Mermaid Zest. The packaging is plastic-free and features a compostable tamper-proof seal.

Rooted in the island landscape of England's southern coast, the Isle of Wight distillery aims to produce what it calls "sustainable premium spirits" by using biodegradable packaging materials and eliminating plastics.

The newest addition to the brand’s spirits range is a limited-edition: Mermaid Zest Gin. The bespoke bottle (Vetroelite) is adorned with fish-like scales, meant to evoke a mermaid’s tail. The bottle is decorated with a semi-transparent, emerald green water-based coating. The brand opted to forego a traditional paper label, and instead applied the name directly on the glass in gold. An embossed golden neck label (DayMark) is crafted from recycled paper.

The bottle is topped with a Portuguese cork and wooden stopper and features a corn and potato starch tamper neck seal (both Viscose Closures). 100% Plastic-free, the seal is said to be compostable. Isle of Wight distillery opted for cardboard boxes designed to hold six bottles for shipping.

Mermaid Zest gin blends summer citrus fruit, "coastal" botanicals and rosemary. Launched in June, it retails at €47 for 70cl.
