Estonian start-up Raiku scooped this year’s award for Raiku Wrap, a 100% wood product designed to replace plastic bubble wrap or paper. It has a flexible, spring-like structure achieved via a thermal treatment that uses no water or chemicals and is said to use 50-times less energy compared to paper and cardboard. "Raiku Wrap’s carbon footprint is ten times lower than paper," Karl Pärtel, Raiku Co-Founder tells Formes de Luxe, adding that the product is compostable. 1m3 cube of wood creates 15-20m3 of Raiku Wrap, which can be used for packaging applications in cosmetics and fragrance, watches and jewelry, wines and spirits and luxury e-commerce.
Pärtel says that the company just launched pilot production in Estonia, where it plans to build a factory in 2024. “The idea is to eventually build a larger scale production facility in Europe, in France or Germany,” he says.
