Lindores Abbey Distillery repurposes dunnage wood for new launch

Scotland’s Lindores Abbey Distillery is gearing up to launch its 1494 members’ release, a limited-edition single malt scotch whisky that takes its design cues from Lindores Abbey, where the distillery is based.

Lindores Abbey Distillery has come full circle with its 1494 members’ release; the whisky is displayed on a wooden plinth fashioned from the same wood on which the casks rested while maturing. Managing Director Andrew McKenzie Smith worked with Edinburgh-based Nevis Design on the project.

“In what we believe to be an industry first, we have repurposed the dunnage wood on which our first casks sat to incorporate it into the presentation of our inaugural bottling,” Smith explains to Luxe Packaging Insight. The plinth is marked with the unique membership number of those signed up to the distillery’s 1494 members’ club; the number relates to the year of the earliest written reference to whisky — referred to as Aqua Vitae at the time.

The bespoke bottle’s (Stoelzle Glass) shape is based on the remains of the few stone pillars still standing at Lindores Abbey. The brand originally commissioned the amber glass bottle for its Aqua Vitae botanical spirit in 2017, and for the 1494 members’ edition, had it sprayed matte black in a nod to the robes worn by the monks at the Abbey.

The bottle’s facing is adorned with a label (Label-Tec) made with Fasson Matt intense black-gunmetal silver foil and Kurz Luxor Gold/Copper foil, with ‘1494’ in a high-build tactile varnish. The stopper (J. C. Ribeiro) is engraved with ‘1494’.

Just 1494 bottles will be available.
