La Alazana whisky: straight from Argentina

The story behind La Alazana is a blend of family history. Co-founder Nestor Serenelli’s Italian grandparents have been distilling fruit with barley since they arrived in Argentina, while his wife Lila's ancestors came to Patagonia at the end of the 19th century from Wales. The name of their peated whisky, Haidd Merlys, pays homage to her ancestors. So when the duo set out to produce Argentina’s first single malt, it was a logical step.

From Edinburgh, where they spent several years in apprenticeship, the couple brought back not only blending know-how, but also the design codes in force in the world of whisky. The single malt’s label and case, created by Argentine designer Pablo Quiroga, combine sober black with golden inscriptions. Decorative details on the box are printed in relief on Cartulina TRX 300g matte laminated polypropylene paper, while the 750ml transparent stock bottle (distributed by Mendoza-based company Blue Sky) features a protrusion on the neck that is common in the world of whisky. The "bar top" type corks are imported from Portugal (Corchos de Argentina).

The casks in which the single malt is aged for 10 years are sourced in the winemaking province of Mendoza. For the time being, production is limited to around 40 barrels per year due to its age. Export markets include Canada, the US, France, Scotland and Japan. Customers can also visit the farm, which now produces its own barley, in the grandiose landscapes of Lago Puelo to taste and buy the whisky directly from the source.
