L’Or de Jean Martell Zodiac Edition debuts with Assemblage du Tigre

Maison Martell’s Zodiac Edition is the first limited edition of the cognac house’s L’Or de Jean Martell. The collection opens with Assemblage du Tigre in celebration of 2022 Chinese New Year; the iconic carafe sports a gold filigree décor and is topped with a tiger-shaped stopper in pâte de cristal.

In honor of Chinese New Year, cognac purveyor Maison Martell has unveiled L’Or de Jean Martell Zodiac Edition – Assemblage du Tigre. The graphics of the limited-edition decanter celebrating the Year of the Tiger are the work of France’s PBM Design Studio, which also was behind the creation of the textured oak coffret.

The Zodiac Edition is housed in the same crystal carafe (Vista Alegre) as L’Or de Jean Martell, decorated with a gold filigree motif that evokes this year’s zodiac animal. “The graphics, a scroll of vines and flowers native to Asia, are meant to celebrate this marriage of two cultures. Two tiger figures on either side provide legitimacy and balance.” explains PBM Design Studio. The carafe is gold plated on the facing and engraved on the back.

Designed in-house at Martell in collaboration with French crystal maker Daum, the tiger-shaped stopper in pâte de cristal boasts an amber-hue in a nod to the color of cognac. Each unique stopper is individually signed.

To create contrast and enhance the liquid’s amber hue, the coffret in textured oak (Krepel) is stained in a dark shade. Inside, the mirrored back is designed to add depth, while a gilded brass tiger head adorns the facing. The linear textured grain of the doors is “meant to recall tiger paw scratches,” details PBM Design Studio.

For the Zodiac Edition, Martell Cellar Master Christophe Valtaud added eight eaux-de-vie from past Years of the Tiger to the original L’Or de Jean Martell blend of more than 700 eaux-de-vie. Borderies eaux-de-vie are said to accentuate the richness of the original blend, while Petite Champagne and Grande Champagne add vivacity, and Fins Bois freshness and lightness.

Just 700, individually numbered decanters are available, each priced at €8,000.

Every year, Maison Martell will release a new L’Or de Jean Martell Zodiac Edition in celebration of the year’s zodiac animal.
