Stella McCartney chose refillable airless packaging for its "clean", vegan skincare line, Stella. The refill for the serum and moisturizer can also be used as a standalone, on-the-go product.
Ethical luxury fashion pioneer Stella McCartney made its first foray into skincare last autumn. Developed with LVMH Beauty Division, the line consists of just three products: a cleanser, a serum and a cream.
The primary packaging of the Alter-Care serum and Restore cream is comprised of a 50ml refill (Texen), an airless pump (Silgan Dispensing) and a glass bottle or jar (Bormioli Luigi) containing up to 15% recycled glass. The Italian glassmaker pointed out the challenge of ensuring the minimum size for the opening with sufficient depth to allow the refill to easily fit into the jar or bottle.
The reusable pump kit integrates recycled ocean-bound plastic feedstock sourced from Plastic Bank. At end of life the pouch and cap can be recycled, while the pump kit and the bottle or jar are designed to be reused.
Texen, which acquired PRP’s flexible packaging business last year, produced the refill pouches for the serum and cream. The format is a multi-layer complex combining PE of varying densities, while the shoulder is in HDPE. The flip-top cap is made of PP. According to the brand, the refills are made from "recyclable and certified renewable sources – predominantly from wood waste”.
The refills are embellished using reverse printing, where the internal side of the top layer is printed. Thanks to its flip-top cap, the flexible refill can be used without the glass bottle or jar. This year, Stella McCartney plans to use bottles and jars with 40% recycled glass content.
Stella McCartney’s skincare products come in boxes made from 100% FSC-certified paper.
The products’ fragrance signature, High Cliff, was created with perfumer Francis Kurkdjian.
