How beauty sampling is adapting to post-covid retail

With retail stores implementing social distancing measures, beauty brands are having to rethink the sampling experience. Sampling suppliers have been quick to develop new products or revisit existing ranges in a bid to enhance the in-store experience while putting the health of consumers and store staff front and center.

Arcade Beauty says it has “reconsidered its entire makeup and perfume offer” to adapt it to new constraints post-covid. The supplier’s unit doses and other thermoformed samples are now either available in sheets (to be detached by the beauty advisor) or can be packaged in a display for self-service distribution.

In fragrance, Arcade Beauty offers a multitude of sampling options, from thermoformed doses (pictured), cushion blotters and scented wipes, to its scentSceal solution, which incorporates a fragrance scent into a gel to be applied to the skin.

Orlandi is highlighting V-shapes (pictured), its beauty samples that can be opened with one hand. The single-dose product is designed to cleanly dispense formula regardless of viscosity, with product restitution close to 100%. V-shapes can be used for hand sanitizer, fragrance, creams, oils and shampoo, among other formulas. They are available in four versions: standard, compostable, 80% bio-sourced and mono-material (and therefore recyclable). Shiseido is one brand that opted for the V-shapes, using it for its Ultimune skincare in both point-of-sale and press sampling.

ID Scent is putting the spotlight on its no-contact solutions designed for fragrance discovery at the point-of-sale. Scentest (pictured) enables consumers to test a scent without touching the display bottle. It was developed with sustainability in mind: ScentTest is made of paper and without aluminum and therefore recyclable.

Described as a “new fragrance gesture”, Scentouch is a patented, bottle-shaped fragrance sampler made of paper. The consumer removes the cap to reveal the fragrance-impregnated applicator.

Scentweave, meanwhile, is a perfumed ribbon. Designed as a fashion accessory rather than simply a sample, it can be worn and retain its scent for several days. All three of ID Scent’s pre-perfumed, alcohol-free solutions can be made available in self-service or distributed by a salesperson.
