EcoBeautyScore Consortium aims to boost beauty product transparency

An industry initiative geared at environmentally assessing and scoring beauty products, first announced last September, is taking form. The newly minted EcoBeautyScore Consortium, founded by L’OréalLVMHNatura &Co, Unilever and Henkel, now has more than 30 members worldwide. Plans are underway to roll out a first scoring prototype later this year.

Some 36 beauty groups, suppliers and industry associations* have joined EcoBeautyScore Consortium since the global project launched in September 2021. The initiative, whose mission is to establish a global environmental assessment and scoring system for beauty products, is a response to growing consumer demand for transparency in their cosmetics, says the Consortium. In collaboration with sustainability consultancy Quantis, the system will assess and score the environmental footprint in three key areas: product formulation, packaging and usage. A first “footprinting and scoring prototype” is to go live at the end of 2022.

Four main tools will be used: a method to measure the environmental impact of a product’s entire lifecycle based on the European Union’s PEF, or Product Environmental Footprint; a database outlining the impact of ingredients and raw materials commonly used in formulation and packaging, but also at the product usage phase; a tool to assess a product’s impact deemed “usable by non-experts” and lastly, a harmonized scoring system allowing the consumer to gauge a product’s environmental impact.

EcoBeautyScore Consortium is open to all industry players. For those looking to join, contact contact@ecobeautyscore-consortium.org.
