Eastman signs MoU with ELC for recycled plastics

The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has signed a global Memorandum of Understanding with chemicals company Eastman to boost its use of recycled and recyclable plastics in its packaging.

ELC is to incorporate packaging solutions enabled by Eastman’s molecular recycling technologies and range of Renew resins across its portfolio. The two companies are said to be working on “a number of projects” spanning make-up, skincare and fragrance.

For Eastman, the move marks its first sustainability-based agreement with a major prestige beauty player. Its Renew resins are said to offer up to 100% certified recycled content without compromising on performance or aesthetics.

"Our suppliers play a critical role in helping The Estée Lauder Companies continue to move the needle and think innovatively about sustainability," said Roberto Magana, senior vice president and chief procurement officer for The Estée Lauder Companies, in a statement.

By 2025, ELC is aiming for 75% to 100% of its packaging to be recyclable, refillable, reusable, recycled or recoverable. In the same year, ELC will increase the amount of PCR material in its packaging by up to 50%.
