Copenhagen Distillery launches first single malt

Denmark's Copenhagen Distillery has unveiled its First Edition Single Malt Whisky, a limited-edition spirit that claims to be the first “made in Copenhagen” single malt.

Produced using local malted barley aged for three years in beechwood-smoked European oak casks "in the style of a Danish smokehouse", the whisky reveals notes of chocolate, nuts and an oily note of smoked Danish beech wood.

For the project, Copenhagen Distillery chose to work with local companies, from its packaging suppliers to the designers at Copenhagen-based Thank You Studio. First Edition Single Malt Whisky comes in a mouth-blown glass decanter, the standard “Klukflasker” model produced by glassmaker Holmegaard, so named for the gurgling sound that results when air enters the decanter’s characteristic pillars upon pouring.

Supplier August Sandgren created the wooden, textile-sheathed coffret; its signature, traditional book box design was sized to fit the bottle. To create the coffret’s rough, yet sophisticated look, August Sandgren opted for a wool textile (REMIX2) sourced from Danish design textile company Kvadrat, an upholstery material selected for its durability. The interior of the coffret is lined in dark green aniline leather (leather dyed with soluble dyes) from Spain that acquires a patina over time. "For Copenhagen Distillery we wanted to create packaging that would be an object in itself and something the customer would notice and likely use even after the whiskey bottle is empty. Our Bookbox was therefore a great foundation for this development," explains August Sandgren CEO Pia Kirkeskov Andersen.

As the bottles are hand blown, they vary in capacity. The small bottles hold between 5cl and 15cl, while the medium bottles hold between 20cl and 40cl. Just 100 of each size have been produced, with a number hand-engraved on each bottle: x/100. First Edition Single Malt costs €26 per cl and the bottles are filled to order.

Copenhagen Distillery was founded in 2014.
