French candlemaker Trudon has launched L’Oeuf, an egg-shaped cabinets of curiosities-style diffuser made of bisque porcelain and turned wood.

“There is a demand for objects that perfume in a passive manner, in other words, without a flame. We had wanted to explore the diffuser segment, but with an original approach that gives real value in its form, as a decorative object and in the user experience,” Trudon creative director Julien Pruvost tells Luxe Packaging Insight.

Trudon’s creative processes are rooted in history; the brand has its origins in the 17th century. In the case of L’Oeuf, for which it called upon designer Dimitri Smilenko, inspiration came in the form of cabinets of curiosities. Portuguese-based supplier J.O.T LDA brought to life the artist’s vision, producing both the egg-shaped object in bisque porcelain (a white, unglazed porcelain) and the turned wooden base donning a matte black satin finish. Each handmade piece, fired at 1380°C, is molded, dried and then sanded by hand to obtain a perfect shape.

The egg shape presented several technical challenges, according to Pruvost. “With a round shape, you place the fragrance and the sticks inside, the liquid goes up in the sticks by capillarity and then comes back down; when it does, the liquid had a tendency to run onto the diffuser. To avoid this, we worked with the manufacturer to glaze the inside of the opening and create a slight slope, which was a real feat. Inside the object, successive layers on the bottom allow the fragrance sticks to remain spread out instead of clumped together.”

L’Oeuf, its base, aluminum funnel and the fragrance comes in an FSC-certified paper box (Valtenna) with recyclable cardboard insert. The scent is housed in a 100% recycled plastic bottle with a recyclable aluminum cap. Pruvost highlights that as Trudon strives to favor low-impact materials, it no longer uses cellophane, opts for paper labels and is progressively moving away from the use of mousse inserts.

An intial 3,000 diffusers were created for the launch in May, and an additional 3,000 are set to be produced through the end of this year.

The diffuser is designed to be used with three of Trudon’s fragrances: Ernesto, Abd el Kader and Cyrnos. It retails at €290 (including a fragrance refill), while the 300ml fragrance refill and a set of diffuser sticks costs €70.
