Since 1945, a contemporary artist has illustrated the label of each vintage of the renowned Château Mouton Rothschild. For the 2020 wine label, the estate called on Scottish painter Peter Doig.
The label of Château Mouton Rothschild’s 2020 vintage features an illustration by Peter Doig. With this work, the figurative painter chose to celebrate the cultivation and harvesting of grapes through figures in an imaginary vineyard landscape. Doig sought to create a link with the works of Jean-François Millet, Van Gogh and Francis Bacon, artists who have represented similar characters in the past; the guitarist is also a tribute to the farm workers of Cézanne and Van Gogh’s Le Semeur, or the Sower.
"This work is a behind-the-scenes take on the world of wine production [...] It's a romantic dream, a moment of poetry [...], a journey into the world of grape harvesting," commented Doig at the label reveal on December 1st.
"Peter Doig's technique and his universe are singular in contemporary painting. His subjects are extremely varied, and his work escapes classification. He has succeeded in creating his own inimitable world," noted Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, co-owner with Camille Sereys de Rothschild and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. De Beaumarchais de Rothschild oversees the estate's artistic and cultural activities.
