Since 1945, a renowned artist has illustrated the Château Mouton Rothschild label every year. For the 2019 vintage, the winegrower partnered with Danish artist Olafur Eliasson.
Philippe and Camille Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, owners of the legendary Pauillac domain, unveiled Solar Iris of Mouton, the new label for Château Mouton Rothschild’s 2019 millésime created by Olafur Eliasson at an event at the Château de Versailles on November 30th.
“Olaf Eliasson’s creation captures the concept of time, the seasons and the sun—central to life—in the form of a diagram," says Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, who oversees the annual label project.
The label is divided horizontally into two parts: a golden band represents the day on the upper portion and a deep blue band symbolizes the night on the lower part. In the label’s center, a circular cutout reveals the wine inside the bottle. "Solar Iris of Mouton is the cartography of all the sunrises and sunsets throughout an entire year at Château Mouton Rothschild" explains Eliasson. The path of the sun is embodied by an analemma, or stretched figure-eight shapes. "Solar Iris of Mouton is the signature of the vineyard, it tells us about the conditions of the vintage and the intimate relationship between the wine and its place of origin. To taste wine is to connect with the local environment and the soil as well as the weather, the seasons and the light," concludes the artist.
The brand chose not to share the name of the printer and label manufacturer.
