Luxury vegan footwear brand Carlotha Ray (HIM Co) is entering the fragrance category with the launch of its first perfumes this September. Designed by Julien Gaubert, the fragrance bottle is said to be one of the thinnest on the market.
A newcomer to the luxury scent arena, Carlotha Ray Parfums has launched with three EdPs. Helius, a French full service provider that works with luxury brands to create, produce and distribute their fragrances and cosmetics, helped bring the brand to life.
French designer Julien Gaubert is behind the flacon, inspired by a 1930s powder case and dreamed up with sustainability in mind. The bottle (Zignago Brosse), weighing in at 104g, is made of 40% recycled glass. An overlocking “C” pattern evoking a wave motif is engraved in the mold. The “C” is also present on the underside of the flacon. For the glassmaker, obtaining a flacon that stands upright despite its extra-slim profile was a key challenge.
This slim profile impacted the design of the cap (Pujolasos), as the brand did not want a stopper that was too imposing. Made of PEFC-certified beech and developed exclusively for Carlotha Ray, the glossy white, spherical cap is hand-sanded and uses water-based paint. The screw pump (Aptar Beauty + Home) enables the flacons to be refilled; refills are slated for 2022.
Fedrigoni’s Freelife Kendo paper was chosen for the label, which features inclusions on the surface and boasts 40% recycled content.
Once the sheath is removed, the FSC-certified origami-style box (SNCA – Cartonnages du Marais) opens like a flower and can be reused as a jewelry box. Carlotha Ray opted for plant-based inks, water-based glue and recyclable cellophane for the packaging.
The made-in-France fragrances - Mandarine & Maté Vert, Poire & Santal Blanc and Rose & Gardenia - were composed by Jean-Michel Duriez of Atelier JMD. Designed to be worn alone or layered, they retail at €85 for 50ml.
Carlotha Ray was founded by designer Mariela Schwarz Montiel in 2019.
