With new packaging and an updated visual identity, Spanish brandy Cardenal Mendoza is looking to appeal to a new generation of consumers while maintaining its traditional codes and brand recognition. Paris-based Appartement 103 was behind the redesign.
For its century-old brandy Cardenal Mendoza, Spanish wine and spirits producer Sanchez Romate Hermanos opted for a more contemporary bottle design and bolder colors, all the while conserving its brand cues.
The brandy is housed in a bespoke bottle (Verallia) that is lighter — 470g for 75cl and 525g for 70cl — and has a more contemporary design than the previous incarnation with higher and sharper shoulders and a deep punt. The redesigned wax seal is applied to a recess on the bottle’s facing. To optimize filling lines, both the 70cl and 75cl versions have the same diameter.
The label (Etiquetas Macho) is made from Tintoretto Cristal Salt, an uncoated texturized paper with a natural aspect. Colorful swirls were brought to the forefront, and a more vibrant yellow was selected, while the Cardenal illustration was digitally redrawn, keeping the antique feel and texture of an oil painting.
A coated white carton box (Egisa) houses the brandy; both box and label are offset printed, adorned with gold hot stamping and blind embossing. Cardenal Mendoza is produced in Jerez de la Fronteira in Spain and aged for at least 15 years in sherry wine casks.
