Evanesto, an additive developed by French start-up Carbiolice, promises to make PLA packaging fully compostable and biodegradable.
Carbiolice claims that by adding its enzyme additive Evanesto to PLA—plant-based plastic made from corn or sugarcane—the packaging will biodegrade and be home-compostable within 200 days. The enzymatic additive is added to the PLA-based material during the production processes, which include extrusion, injection, calendering and thermoforming. Depending on the amount of PLA in the compound, between 2% and 5% of Evanesto is added to the batch. Once the packaging is put to compost, the enzyme structure activates and accelerates the material’s disintegration, making it 100% compostable without residue, according to the company.
Applications include flexible films, single-use items, bags, trays and pods.
Carbiolice was founded in 2016 to develop compostable and biodegradable bioplastics. The startup is backed financially by Carbios and investment fund SPI; the companies recently injected €7.3m into Carbiolice, bringing its capital to €29.5m.
