Amorepacific to use Eastman’s Cristal Renew in its packaging

US specialty materials provider Eastman has inked a partnership with Amorepacific as the latter ramps up its focus on sustainable packaging. Laneige will be the first of the beauty group’s brands to use Eastman’s Cristal Renew into its packs.

Thanks to a deal with Eastman, Amorepacific is to integrate molecularly recycled copolyester Cristal Renew into its product packaging. Laneige will be the first brand to roll out the new packaging, via its Water Sleeping Mask hitting store shelves from this December.

Cristal Renew, a molecularly recycled copolyester available with 30% or 50% certified recycled content, is chemically identical to virgin material, says Eastman. Luxe Packaging Insight spoke to the company’s Glenn Goldman last summer about the process. “Molecular recycling is so called because the waste plastic is “unzipped” or converted back into its molecular form and then rebuilt into the polymers that eventually become packaging or other items,” he explained. “The technology allows us to offer high levels of certified recycled content; we divert waste that would otherwise go to landfill.”

Eastman has also forged similar agreements with Parfums Christian Dior and The Estée Lauder Companies for the supply of its resins.

For Amorepacific, the deal with Eastman is the latest in its sustainable packaging efforts. Earlier this year it unveiled a paper-based tube, with compostable tubes also in the pipeline. Last year, Amorepacific’s Senior Vice President, Sustainability Management, Oh Jeong-hwa, detailed the group’s plans to reduce its reliance on plastics.
