Amorepacific has unveiled patented technology for the in-house manufacturing of paper-based tubes. The South Korean beauty group’s primera brand will be the first in its portfolio to launch the new packaging. Compostable tubes are also in the pipeline.
Forging ahead with its green packaging strategy, Amorepacific’s paper-based tube, an alternative to plastic or aluminum cosmetics tubes, cuts down on the use of plastic, while offering a longer shelf life to the formula. Indeed, the new packs are said to reduce plastic use by around 70% compared to previous tubes and overcome shelf life limitations linked to existing paper tube solutions due to poor airtightness to enable a product expiration date of up to 36 months.
The patented innovation features a “nano membrane” barrier technology on the body of the tube. The cap, however, is made of plastic. The group says it is equipped to mass produce the paper tubes using “fully domestic technology”. The technology is also said to be compatible with products that contain active ingredients.
Amorepacific’s ‘clean’ beauty brand primera will be the first to adopt the new packaging in the first half of this year.
Going a step further, Amorepacific R&D Center Executive Vice President YoungHo Park said in a statement that the group is currently developing paper containers that are “100% compostable, while ensuring products’ expiration date.”
In June of last year, Luxe Packaging Insight spoke to Oh Jeong-hwa, Senior Vice President of Sustainability Management about the group’s initiatives to reduce its reliance on plastic packaging. Amorepacific aims to reduce its plastic consumption by up to 700 tons by 2022.
