A new look for Chateau Rieussec’s Sauternes wine

French winery Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite has revamped the bottle of Chateau Rieussec’s Premier Grand Cru Classé wine. The traditional transparent bottle has been replaced with opaque vessel bearing a minimalistic yellow crown on the facing and a spherical cork stopper designed by Swiss agency Big Game.

In an effort to change the image of Chateau Rieussec’s emblematic Sauternes wine and attract new consumers, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite decided to reimagine its packaging. “The time had come for Rieussec to reinvent itself, so that the vineyard, wine and bottle all share the same commitment to sustainable development,” explains Saskia de Rothschild, chairwoman of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild estate. The previous, clear glass bottle was left behind and in its place came an opaque bottle atypical for Sauternes wines, making it “the first of its kind”. Housing a Rieussec 2019 vintage wine, the bottle is made using Spanish glassmaker Estal’s Wild Glass, with 95% PCR content.

The bottle comes with two cork stoppers – a standard cork stopper sealing the bottle and a spherical cork stopper designed by Swiss design agency Big Game. The spherical stopper can be used to close the bottle once uncorked. It features a bright yellow cord (Corderie Palus) to slip over the bottle neck, the color of which echoes the hue of the silk-screened label on the facing. In the form of a color-block style crown, the label can be peeled off and the bottle reused as a decanter or vase.

Instead of wooden crates, Chateau Rieussec opted for DS Smith’s cardboard boxes sealed with craft tape and printed sparingly.

The Rieussec 2019 comes in a 0.75l bottle retailing at €120.
