O-I student design awards winners revealed

Glassmaker O-I unveiled the winners of its student design awards last week. Chinese students scooped the top prize for a gourd-inspired bottle for a bitter melon health drink.

For the 2022 O-I : Expressions Design Awards, glassmaker O-I and agency Design Bridge created a brief for students to “express something important to them” through packaging design.

Chinese students Dizhao Mao, Kang Yu, Zhuolin Wang and LongKai Chen were declared the winners of the awards for their packaging concept for a traditional Chinese health drink. O-I’s Attenua bottle from its Contemporary Collection was decorated using O-I : Expressions, with embossed printing mimicking the texture and appearance of the gourd from which the bitter melon juice is extracted.

Li Lu, also from Hunan University of Technology, took home the Silver Award for a Sauvignon Blanc wine design. Dubbed “The Butterfly Lovers”, the concept is inspired by a traditional Chinese love story. Here, O-I : Expressions Relief printing was used to create a design of delicacy and finesse.

Gareth Fitzpatrick from Norwich University of the Arts won the Bronze Award for his Aur Du (Black Gold) concept based on South Wales’ coal mining history. Using O-I : Expressions Relief tactile printing, the spirits bottle was decorated with a coal texture, embellished with hints of gold. “Even though no gold foiling is present in the design, by using O-I’s CMYK spectrum, I was able to achieve a gold foil effect,” notes Fitzpatrick.
