Finnish paperboard manufacturer Metsä Board has kicked off the second edition of Better With Less, its design competition that aims to promote the use of less material and to propose paperboard as an alternative to the use of plastic packaging. “We need to challenge the packaging world with new solutions, new ways of thinking and new innovations. This competition is all about lessening environmental impact without compromising brand experiences. We aim to help advance innovative and sustainable packaging design throughout the world,” explains Ilkka Harju, this year’s contest chairman, member of the jury and also packaging services director at Metsä Board.

Designers and students can enter the contest until next January 5 via its dedicated site The competition is divided into four categories: cosmetics, e-commerce, food as well as a “wild card” section.

This year’s jury is comprised of six professionals, including, Alissa Demorest, editor in chief of this magazine.
