The winners of the 2019 Verallia Design Awards worked on the theme le verre en fete, (celebrating glass) for the competition’s tenth edition. Prizes were awarded in five categories (wine, non-alcoholic beverages, spirits, beer, and food), as well a special prize to promote glass recycling among young consumers.
Malo Sahores, a student at the École de Design de Nantes Atlantique, won first prize in the Wine category with Jarence, a streamlined and elegant champagne bottle featuring a single decorative element: lines in relief inspired, according to the designer, by a fountain’s jets of water. “The bottle’s overall form is similar to a Champagne bottle so the consumer identifies it as such,” explains the glassmaker.
Iris, a project developed by Pierre Strepponi (Rive Gauche technical high school), aims to re-enchant and restore elegance to non-alcoholic beverage packaging. The small-format bottle (25cl), ribbed with vertical lines, features a stopper similar to old-fashioned artisan beer bottles. Clearly inspired by perfume flacons, the bottle features a large front-facing surface intended for a label.
Technology, and smartphones in particular, are an integral part of the experience offered by Vodka Eclipse (Thomas Brousse, École Boulle), a bottle that won first prize in the Spirits category. The bottle’s front facing (in transparent glass, as is the vodka) features a concave space for a smartphone that stays in place thanks to a silicone strap. The user downloads an app that projects light to transform the bottle into a color “spotlight.”
Note de Houblon, a “musical beer bottle” created by Julien Jimonet (ESAAT, Roubaix), caught the attention of the jury president, chef Victor Mercier, who awarded him the Jury’s Prize. Inspired by Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations, the bottle features a combination of raised interior engraving and thick exterior engraving enabling the consumer to “play” the bottle as a musical instrument using the metal capsule. The harp-shaped engraved pattern gradually reveals itself as the beer is consumed.
Finally, first-place in the Food category went to Verapearl, a jar inspired by the current “flavor bead” food trend, by Chloé Lange and Clémence Minne from IUT d’Avignon.
